Processes of knowledge co-production and urban climate resilience

In the face of current uncertainty and unexpected disturbance, e.g., climate change, exploring how learning processes from grassroots initiatives and/or co-produced actions can promote urban resilience and lead to transformation/change (in formal and/or informal contexts).

The political ecology of smart cities

We look for PhD students interested in exploring the materiality and the politics of smart cities initiatives in different geographies. We aim for critical understandings, from a political ecology and critical studies perspective, of the implications, politics and unexpected impacts of such paradigms in different geographies. We are also interested in exploring more heterodox and progressive approaches of the use of urban (digital) technologies to foster more sustainable cities.

Climate emergency and urban resilience: exploring the interplay between communitarian and grassroots initiatives and institutionalized policies

In a context of climate emergency, cities in the Global North and South are exploring strategies to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, while moving to greener and more sustainable cities. The collaboration with citizens, grassroots and civil society is opening the possibility to the co-production of interesting environmental policies but it may also not deliver what it promises. This thesis may explore such initiatives as political ecology and from critical urban studies.

Urban Digital economies and cultures outside the metropolis

We look for PhD students interested in exploring the materiality and the politics of alternative digital (agricultural, manufacturing or service) economies in non-metropolitan regions (e.g. rural or small towns and their hinterland). We are also interested in exploring innovative cultural and digital research or production spaces and architectures in non-metropolitan particular.

Ethical leadership and gender

Culture diversity and ethical values in organisations remain a significant challenge for both small and medium enterprises and large corporations. We are looking for candidates that would like to explore societal changes related to work practices, and analyse new practices in talent management and technology solutions that focus on cultures that have ethics in the centre.
